In less than a month, fall will be sneaking up on us, and this recipe for fall-flavored oats is the ideal way to ease into the change of seasons. It has the mouthwatering flavor of apple pie, but with more nutrients and fewer calories. Let’s raise a glass to a new year of healthy eating;)

I use pumpkin pie spice as a secret ingredient in my recipe. Although I love apple and cinnamon together, I believe that pumpkin pie spice adds more of a pie flavor.

Apple Pie Oats Ingredients

Apple Pie Oats – Stovetop

  • Oats, rolled, in a cup
  • 1 apple, 1.5 cups of water
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup
  • Pumpkin pie spice, 1/4 teaspoon

Apple Pie Oats Toppings

  • Swirl of milk, almonds, walnuts, and sliced apple

Instructions

Apple Pie Oats – Stovetop

  1. The apple should be cut into small cubes. Bring the water, apple, maple syrup/honey, and pumpkin pie spice to a boil in a pot. Reserve some for topping if desired.
  2. Add the rolled oats when it comes to a boil and cook until it becomes thick.
  3. Add the toppings you want and pour into a boiling pot.

Notes

  • After the oats are cooked, add the milk; lately, I’ve also started doing this with my oats. I cook the oats with water first, then add the milk once they are thick. They taste much creamier as a result!
  • Since oats take longer to cook than apples do, I prefer to cook the apples first. When the apples are almost done, I add rolled oats.
  • Water: Since many people, including myself, dislike cooking their oats in pure water, I add milk at the end. However, you can use any plant or dairy milk in place of the water if you prefer to cook the oats directly with milk.
  • Apple – you can substitute applesauce for fresh apples in this recipe if you do not have any on hand; however, doing so may alter the flavor.
  • I’ve used honey and maple syrup as sweeteners, both of which I enjoyed and couldn’t tell the difference between. Any other sweetener, including sugar or sugar substitutes, should work. Just make sure that the flavor of the sweetener isn’t too strong!
