Slow Cooker Italian Sausage and Peppers
Italian Sausage and Peppers are a fantastic, flavorful dish that is quite easy to make. It tastes like an Italian sausage pizza without the crust and is very simple to make.
Serve the sausage and peppers from the slow cooker hot out of the pot, on a bun, or with a little cheese melted on top under the broiler. The dish is also keto-friendly, sugar-free, gluten-free, and low in carbs.
My go-to recipe on our food blog is this one. Seriously! Not only are the ingredients few and straightforward, but the flavor combination itself is also fantastic and unique. I’m sure the tasty sauce and Italian sausage grease has something to do with it.
Italian Sausage and Peppers Ingredients
- Italian sausages, 1 package (5)
- Sliced one red pepper
- 1 sliced green pepper
- One big onion
- 1/8 teaspoon of garlic salt
- 1/8 teaspoon of Italian seasoning
- Black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon
- chunky marinara sauce, 1 cup
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Shredded mozzarella cheese, 1/2 to 3/4 cup
Instructions
- Add a little olive oil to a medium-sized skillet and heat it up.
- Sear the Italian sausages for two to three minutes on each side until they begin to brown. You are not attempting to cook them to perfection; rather, you are merely browning the outside, which always enhances flavor when slow-cooked.
- Place the seared Italian sausages in the crock-pot’s bottom.
- On top of the sausages, add the sliced, uncooked peppers and onions.
- Italian seasoning, black pepper, and garlic salt are added to the top.
- The onion and pepper mixture should be covered with the marinara sauce.
- The crock pot sausage and peppers recipe can be cooked on high for 3 to 4 hours or low for 6 to 7 hours until the Italian sausage is cooked through and the peppers are soft.
- Take the crockpot Italian sausage and peppers out of the slow cooker, spread them in a pan that is safe for broiling, and follow the instructions for the cheese in the optional section to up the flavor.
Optional – Add Cheese in Italian Sausage and Peppers
- Sprinkle 1/2 to 3/4 cup of your preferred shredded white cheese on top, such as mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Italian blend, or Colby Jack.
- The Italian sausage and pepper mixture should be broil for one to two minutes, 4 inches away from the heat source, until the cheese has melted.
Optional – Serve on a bun with cheese
- A lot of people also love to eat sausage and peppers cooked in the slow cooker and served on a bun, like a big, messy hot dog. It’s delicious as well! If you want the crockpot sausage, peppers, and onions with BOTH cheese and a bun, you’ll want to toast the buns slightly before serving.
- Toast the buns and spread a little butter on them. Then, top them with the crock pot sausage, pepper, and cheese mixture, sprinkle with shredded cheese, and broil them until the cheese is melted. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t burn.
- Serve and have fun!
