SWEET AND SOUR TOFU

Wake up late in the morning and you want to prepare a quick dish with rice for lunch? Don’t waste your time and roll into the kitchen and make sweet and sour tofu right now with X2coupons!

Who needs takeout when you can make dishes like these at home?

We’ve combined two of our most popular recipes (Easy Crispy Tofu and Sweet & Sour Cauliflower) to create this simple and delectable dinner that the entire family will enjoy.

We altered both recipes slightly to achieve the ideal tofu-to-sauce ratio, and let us assure you, this dish does not disappoint (it may even convert a tofu-hater)! Furthermore, you most likely have the majority, if not all, of the components in your pantry. If you don’t, don’t worry; we’ve included links to our favorites below.

THE INGREDIENTS

All you need for the sweet and sour sauce are the following simple ingredients:

  • Maple syrup or agave syrup (we like this kind)
  • Soy sauce (this is our favorite brand)
  • Vinegar of rice (this is the kind we use)
  • Sesame seed oil
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Sauce with chili and garlic (optional)

And the tofu requires just THREE ingredients (tofu, cornstarch, and oil). Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Yep!

We make this tofu dish all the time since it is not only simple to make but also produces the crispiest tofu EVER.

This tofu is bliss when paired with a sticky, delicious, sweet, and sour sauce. Furthermore, you can put this sauce on anything, so be creative and start cooking! If you prepare this recipe, be sure to give us a review and tag us on Instagram!

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT SWEET AND SOUR TOFU

Make the crispy tofu as follows:

Tofu should be drained and pressed for at least 30 minutes (follow our instructions for how to do this here).

Tofu should be cut into tiny chunks.

In a mixing basin, combine the cornstarch.

Shake the tofu pieces in the mixing basin until they are completely covered with cornstarch (alternatively you can coat each piece separately).

Heat the oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat.

Fill the pan halfway with tofu.

Allow the tofu pieces to crisp on the bottom side first, then flip them over and crisp on the other side.

Place the tofu on a plate or in a dish after removing it from the pan. Clean the pan and begin making the sauce.

Create the sauce:

To make the sauce, mix together the soy sauce and maple syrup in a skillet over medium heat.

Combine the rice vinegar and sesame oil in a mixing bowl.

Add the chopped garlic, ginger, and chili garlic sauce next (if using). Mix.

Separately, put 2 tsp cornstarch and 2 tbsp water in a small dish. Mix until the cornstarch is completely dissolved.

Mix in the cornstarch/water combination one more in the pot.

Increase the heat to medium-high and simmer the sauce until it turns thick and sticky, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low after it has thickened.

Serving and enjoying:

To combine and serve, add the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss until well covered.

Serve immediately or over-cooked rice. Serve with sesame seeds and green onions on top. Enjoy!
